Review – Oddworld New n Tasty
Courtesy of the folks at Oddworld Inhabitants, today I’m covering the alien adventures of Abe, with the ground-up remake for Nintendo Switch. With the new release on the portable platform, I’m taking a look over the mudakon’s return with Oddworld, New N Tasty
The Basics
Those of you who have been here for a while will know that I’m a big fan of retro, and with a specific love for the PS1 I still have my original copy of Abe’s Oddysee from when it released around 23 years ago.
New N Tasty brings a new look at this pretty epic story, with a lot of advancements made along the way. You’ll work as Abe, upgraded from 2D to a 2.5D world, and with smooth scrolling through the environment rather than the older flipscreen gameplay
Your mission however remains the same. Escape from the deathly clutches of Rupture Farms, and save your species from certain extinction at the weird leg-hands of the every hungry glukkons
Parent’s Eye View
Oddworld, New N Tasty is rated by PEGI at 12 and above, and by the ESRB at T for Teen. There are a few elements in here which might cause a little concern. These include blood and gore in the form of exploding bodies and gunshots, along with the various deaths which you will subject Abe to along the way. In addition, there is some crude humour in the title along with cigar smoking board members.
It’s one which I can remember playing at a fairly young age, and the crude humour at that point was right up my own alley. Violence is presented in a comedic fashion but you can’t ignore the more graphic elements. Unfortunately with this one, for the younger members of the family it’s one I would err away from due to content and complexity, but it will be different for each micro-bandit.

Accessibility
In terms of accessibility Oddworld, New N Tasty is getting a rating of high-level. With the single player and co-op action fairly easy to pick up whenever you like, this would normally have a lower rating. Anybody who’s played the Oddysee titles previously however will know that these can provide quite a challenge with quick and accurate control needed to guide Abe through the various levels. With a good eye on timing, and some deft jumps and rolls under your belt you’ll make it through, but it could provide some challenges.
The Run Down
Visuals – Great: The visuals are a far cry from the original PS1 graphics, and I’ve been pretty impressed at what they’ve packed into the portable platform. The smooth scrolling screens work well and the rebuilt visuals really retain the gritty feel of the original in a new and much more polished package.
Audio – Good: Nostalgia fans beware as to bring things up to date there are some changed voices and sounds throughout. They are, however, implemented well as long as you don’t try and hold onto the past. This has only been marked down from great because of some sporadic issues here and there with sounds which seem to be missing, but these examples are few and far between

Narrative – Great: Those who’ve played Abe’s Oddysee presiovuly will know that this one comes with an epic story. It’ll be very enjoyable for newcomers, and while I would have loved to see some new content in here, it’s still very enjoyable for us old timers too
Replay – Good: I would have liked to see some more collectables outside the Mudakons you must rescue throughout the title. The game does let you replay chapters which is quite nice when looking to catch them all.

The Verdict
Overall the Pixel Bandits Follow Me Level for Oddworld, New N Tasty is Grab It. . This one has a really low price point, and if you have a switch it’s a great portable adventure which will help you kill a lot of time. Nostaliga wise it’s pushing all the right buttons, but the updated visuals and audio really brings the title into the 21st century. It’s one which I’ve loved spending some time with, and one I’ll happily recommend to any other fans of platforming.
